Celebrating the Colourful Origins of Pride: A Journey through Surrey

In a world that is becoming increasingly diverse and accepting, Pride stands as a vibrant symbol of love, unity, and progress. Its roots can be traced back to the Stonewall Riots in New York City, but did you know that the spirit of Pride has also flourished in the serene landscapes of Surrey, England? From modest beginnings to vibrant celebrations, the story of Pride in Surrey is a testament to the power of community and the enduring pursuit of equality. In this blog, I attempt to embark on a journey through time to explore the origins and evolution of Pride in Surrey, highlighting the locations, including Camberley and Woking, that have played a pivotal role in these celebrations.

The Blossoming of Pride in Surrey

Surrey, known for its picturesque countryside and historic charm, might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about LGBTQ+ activism. However, the origins of Pride in Surrey reveal a tale of resilience and determination that resonates with the global LGBTQ+ movement. The early 2000s saw the emergence of small LGBTQ+ gatherings and events in various parts of Surrey, marking the initial steps towards what would become a full-fledged Pride celebration.

The Evolution of Pride Events

It wasn’t until the mid-2010s that Pride events in Surrey gained significant momentum. The inaugural Surrey Pride took place in 2019, a historic moment that brought together people from different walks of life to celebrate love, diversity, and equality. The event was hosted in Woking, sending a powerful message of inclusion that transcended cultural and religious boundaries.

Since that groundbreaking event, Pride in Surrey has evolved into a grand annual celebration that attracts attendees not only from Surrey but also from neighbouring counties and beyond. Locations like Guildford & Epsom have played host to Pride on the Road, providing a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to come together.

Camberley: A Local Celebration with big impact

Camberley, a town known for its community spirit, has become a significant player in Surrey’s Pride celebrations. The town’s inclusive attitude and commitment to diversity were on full display when it hosted the Pride in Surrey event. Camberley’s Pride celebrations have featured vibrant parades that wind through the town’s streets, spreading messages of love, acceptance, and LGBTQ+ pride. Watchetts Park, provided the stage for musical performances, engaging talks, and heartwarming gatherings.

Reigate: Writing a New Chapter in the Pride Story

The year 2023 marks another significant milestone in the journey of Pride in Surrey as Reigate becomes a part of the celebratory tapestry. On the 11th of September, Reigate will be the canvas on which the LGBTQ+ community and its allies paint a story of love, acceptance, and progress. As attendees fill the streets with rainbow colors and joyful expressions, Reigate will bear witness to a parade that reflects the strength and resilience of a community determined to break down barriers.

The Pride event in Reigate is a testament to the fact that the spirit of Pride knows no bounds. It demonstrates that every town, regardless of its size, has the power to make a meaningful impact on the journey towards equality. The local support, engaging events, and vibrant celebrations in Reigate add another chapter to the ever-evolving story of Pride in Surrey.

Pride in Surrey is a testament to the indomitable spirit of a community that sought to create a space where love, diversity, and equality could flourish. From humble beginnings to grand celebrations at locations like Camberley, Woking, Reigate, and beyond, the journey sof Pride in Surrey reflects the global journey towards acceptance and understanding. As we look back on the progress made, we are also reminded that the fight for equality is ongoing. Each Pride celebration in Surrey and around the world is a reaffirmation of the values that drive us forward: love, unity, and the belief that everyone deserves a place to proudly be themselves.
