Pedal Power: Uniting Guildford in a Celebration of Youth and Safe Cycling at Kidical Mass

Today (27/04/2024), I had the joyous opportunity to participate once again in the Kidical Mass Ride, held in Guildford. As part of my ongoing role as an Active Travel Champion for Surrey, I got to ride alongside enthusiastic young cyclists and their families and I had the honour of assisting the Marshall team this year—a role I really enjoyed.

Kidical Mass is more than just a cycling event; it’s a global movement with a heartfelt vision: ensuring children and young people can move safely and independently, whether on foot or by bike. With over 700 organisations and initiatives participating worldwide, the movement is creating tangible change, promoting a future where active travel is safe and celebrated.

The streets of Guildford were alive with energy and excitement as children of all ages pedalled their way through the town, their faces lit up with smiles and laughter. It was a day for promoting active travel and a celebration of community and childhood freedom.

I had the pleasure of bumping into some notable supporters of active travel during the event. The Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, Lisa Townsend was present, showing strong support for the cause. Additionally, Guildford MP Angela Richardson was spotted at the tail end of the event, enthusiastically cheering on the young participants. Cllr Sallie Barker, Deputy Mayor of Guildford opened the event.

I’ve captured these wonderful moments in a video that I’m thrilled to share with you all. It not only highlights the joy and excitement of the day but also underscores the importance of our ongoing efforts to make our streets safer for our younger generations.

This event is a brilliant reminder of the power of community and the impact of collective action. It was a privilege to be part of something so impactful, and I look forward to continuing to support and participate in these vital initiatives that champion the cause of active travel.

Watch the video below to catch a glimpse of the day’s festivities and see how Guildford is paving the way towards a safer, more active future for our children.

Let’s keep riding towards a better future!
